Divisions: U14 & Funstix (3v3 format)
Welcome!
We’re excited to celebrate the winter season with our annual Indoor Festival — a fun, fast-paced afternoon of small-sided games that focus on teamwork, creativity, and skill development. This friendly competition brings together athletes from Calgary and surrounding areas for an energetic and positive day of field hockey.
Age Groups & Eligibility
Free agents welcome; all skill levels encouraged
- Players must be FHC members and FHA members. If residing outside Alberta, players must be members of their provincial/regional association
U14 Division
- Ages: 11-14 years
- Birth Years: 2011-2014
- Format: 3 players + goalie (except semis/finals: 4 + goalie)
- Advanced players born after 2014 may be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Teams will be combined, with at least two athletes from the same club grouped together
Funstix Division (U8/U10)
- Ages: 7-10 years
- Birth Years: 2016-2018
- Format: 3v3, no goalkeeper
- Players born in 2019 with previous experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Designed for fun, inclusion, and development through play
What to Expect
- Short, energetic 3v3 matches to maximize touches and skill repetition
- Games are 2 × 13-minute halves with a 2-minute break and 2-minute field transitions
- Umpires will use discretion, especially for Funstix, to keep play flowing
- Focus is on fun, learning, and good sportsmanship — not scores

- Free on-site parking
- Please remove outdoor shoes before entering the turf area
- Limited spectator space — please share seats courteously
- Officials, coaches, athletes, and team managers are the only individuals allowed on the field or in the player boxes
- No food or drink (except water) is allowed on the fields or in the player boxes
What to Bring
- Indoor athletic shoes
- Indoor stick (we can provide if needed)
- Mouthguard (mandatory) and shin pads (mandatory; gloves optional)
- Pinnies will be provided
- Full water bottle
- Great attitude and lots of team spirit!
Volunteer Contribution
Each family is expected to volunteer for the festival. Families that do not volunteer will be charged a $50 volunteer bond. Examples of volunteer jobs:
- Scorekeeping
- Timekeeping
- Umpiring support
- Field setup / tear down
- Pizza donations
- Treat bag assembly
- Umpire meals
- Beverage donations

How to Register
- Sign up with your club by December 6
- Teams email rosters, captain nominations and skill level (0-3) to league@fieldhockey.ab.ca by December 6
- Register as a free agent by December 13, using the following links:
Technical Guidelines / Tournament Regulations
Game Format & Teams
- U14 Division: 3 players + goalie per team (except semis/finals, which play 4 + goalie), scoring circle used
- Funstix Division: 3v3, no goalkeeper, pop-up nets used, scoring circle used
- Teams will be combined, with at least two athletes from the same club grouped together
- Team Captains: Will be assigned from a list provided by club coaches, based on skill, leadership, and maturity
- Co-captains: Cannot be on the field at the same time
- Gender: At least one female on the field at all times when possible (does not include goalie)
Match Duration & Transitions
- 2 × 13-minute halves with a 2-minute break
- 2-minute field transition between games
- No stoppage in time
- Games will not run outside the designated window
Ball Play & Rules
- No hits or sweeps
- No drilling
- No lifting ball except for shots on net
- All shots must be taken from inside the circle
- Defensive fouls will be taken at the ¼ line (marked)
- No short corners, except for semis/finals
- Umpires of Funstix games will enforce basic rules and use discretion in frequency of whistles to allow continuity of play
- Due to small field size, a call of unsafe play will always take precedence
Equipment & Safety
- All athletes must wear a mouthguard
- Shin pads mandatory; gloves optional
- Indoor stick required — can be provided if needed
- Indoor athletic shoes required
- Pinnies provided on-site
Sportsmanship & Conduct
- Please let the players enjoy the game — coaches and officials will guide play. Focus is on skill development, fun, and continuity of play
- Zero tolerance for abuse from parents, coaches, athletes, or spectators
- Umpires may card offending individuals
- Multiple offenses will result in removal
