Field Hockey in the Spotlight in Northeast Calgary
Field hockey received some exciting attention in northeast Calgary on September 12, as our community welcomed Canada’s Secretary of State (Sport) , Adam van Koeverden, and Calgary Ward Five Councillor Raj Dhaliwal for a firsthand look at the sport and the growing field hockey community in Calgary.
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity for our athletes to speak directly with Minister van Koeverden and Councillor Dhaliwal. They shared their own experiences in field hockey, what the sport means to them, and why they love to play. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young athletes to have their voices heard and to share the sport through the people who know it best.
The visit also provided an opportunity for broader conversations about the growth of field hockey in Calgary and one of the significant challenges facing our community: access to appropriate field space.
CTV News Calgary joined us for the event, with reporter Stephen Hunt highlighting the strength and enthusiasm of Calgary’s field hockey community and reporting on the possibility of federal support for a new field.
For Field Hockey Alberta, additional field hockey infrastructure would support opportunities across the athlete pathway - from introducing children and youth to the sport through grassroots and community programming to club competition, provincial development and high-performance opportunities.
We sincerely appreciate Minister van Koeverden and Councillor Dhaliwal taking the time to visit our community, participate with our athletes and, most importantly, listen to them share their experiences and passion for field hockey.
