Long Term Athlete Development - What is it?
The Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model is a concept developed in many countries. LTAD is used to develop a complete sport system that is multi-sport based (not just for field hockey). The LTHD (Long Term Hockey Development Model) was developed by Field Hockey Canada in 2008/2009. FHA has LTHD posters available for all parents, coaches and athletes with details for all the various stages of the LTHD which include tactical, technical, mental, physical & health requirements for each stage. Stages are developed based on chronological age and training age. For more details about the LTAD please visit the Canadian Sport 4 Life website. FHA and the rest of the provincial field hockey programs in Canada are adopting this model for the development of our athletes. The Women's U19 indoor program is considered to be in the Training to Compete stage of the LTHD. The implementation of the LTHD across all programming in Alberta is necessary. We will be providing more details and imformation about the LTHD in the near future.
Fitness Standards
This year we are going to implement MINIMUM fitness standards. Provincial field hockey will see the injection of new fitness standards for each age group and gender based on averages from the previous provincial team seasons. Athletes who do not meet the standards will be on probation until they meet the standard, if the standard is not met these athletes have the potential to not travel with the team to the various tournaments.
All athletes trialling for the 2010/2011 provincial indoor program will be tested based on activities listed below. The beep test will be used as the primary result to determine an athletes status within the program. (i.e. if an athlete acheives higher than the minimum listed below on all the tests except for the beep test, they are still considered on probation). Aerobic capacity is what the beep test is testing. This is a major component for a high performance, provincial field hockey athlete. As our athletes gain experience with these tests, the minimum standards will continue to increase from season to season.

Beep Test - Canadian Version (whole and 1/2 levels only, i.e. 9.0, 9.5, 10.0). GK's will have a different minimum standard than the rest of the athletes. Generally, GK's are required to go 1 level lower than out players. This will be no different for the FHA standards.
If you would like more details on the protocol for each of the tests listed above please do not hesitate to email us.
