School Membership Program

Field Hockey Alberta is pleased to announce the continuation of the Edmonton Schools program. The schools program is aimed at introducing the sport of field hockey, the second largest team sport in the world, to elementary and Jr. High school children. The program will introduce both the indoor & outdoor game that is played internationally around the world.

What is the Schools Program?

This structured program will introduce children to basic field hockey skills through a school clinics as well as promoting the importance and excitement of playing as part of a team. The program is targeted at children in Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 (Elementary level) and 7, 8 & 9 (Jr. High level).
The Program promotes health and exercise in a fun, safe and controlled environment. It also introduces children to a new and growing sport in Edmonton and Alberta.
The culmination of the Program is a full-day Field Hockey Festival in the month of June. This event will feature all the schools involved in the program with a boys and a girl’s teams playing small games against each other.

What is required to participate in the schools program?

A School membership of $150.00 to Field Hockey Alberta (good for one school year)

What is provided with your school membership?
1)School clinic

3 classes of instruction per class from NCCP certified coaches in the sport.
45min classes that can be organized into an all day clinic, or whatever fits into the schools schedule.
Equipment to use during the clinic. (sticks and balls)
During each clinic a highlight video titled “world hockey “will be shown. Highlighting all ages and skill levels of the sport.
Each school will also receive a coaching manual outlining structured lesson plans for a 6-week program that they can keep for further reference. LTAD Model for the sport of field hockey & Physical literacy resources.

2)Equipment available for continued use
Option #1 (Equipment loan)

Request one of the class sets of equipment from FHA to use FREE OF CHARGE. One week max per school at anyone time, can be requested for longer depending of availability. Must replace any lost equipment while in use. ($10-ball $25- stick).

Option #2 BUY

Purchase from Field Hockey Alberta a school equipment package for $600.00 which includes the following that can be used both indoors and outdoors:
-25 sticks (3 different lengths of stick)
-15 Balls

3)Optional Entry to the Spring Festival tournament (Strongly Encouraged)

Schools compete against each other from around the city in a fun festival day tournament.
Each school can enter a boys or a girl’s team or mixed. (Grades 4-9 ONLY)
The tournament will be entirely organized by Field Hockey Alberta; schools just need to show up.
Each participant will receive prizes and souvenirs from the event.
Participation certificates, a tournament trophy for the champions as well as awards for the 2nd and 3rd place finish will be given out at the event.
The tournament will continue on annually with the addition of more schools each year.
The tournament will take place in the month of June, and ideally scheduled around the schools master schedule.
There will be separate tournaments for elementary schools and Jr. High schools.
A school coach could be provided from Field Hockey Alberta if available; however there must be a teacher supervisor for each school.
Coach education clinics will also be provided to anyone interested.
Equipment such as sticks will be available for use ahead of time but will be limited to first come first serve.

Requirements for participation in the school festival

Each school participating must have a school membership from Field Hockey Alberta or pay the $50.00 entry fee for non-members.
Each athlete must be wearing a mouth guard and shin pads (soccer) to participate. This equipment if needed can be purchased from Field Hockey Alberta at a low cost.

When does the Program take place?
Traditionally the program clinics are incorporated into school timetables during the following months:
Clinics: September 2010 to June 2011 BOOK EARLY- as time slots are filling up fast. Clinics can be conducted indoors through the winter months.

Some clinics will be available in May & June- 5 days a week- dependent on instructor availability.

Upcoming Events
The FHC Senior National Championships will be held in Calgary at Hawkings Field, July 21st thru 26th, 2009. Come watch the top hockey players in Canada compete for the honor of Canadian National Champion.
